How to Prepare for an Emergency Breakdown

Murphy's Law states that if something can go wrong, it will go wrong.

In the spirit of leaning on the side of optimism, it it no secret that people often think that accidents and mishaps will not likely befall them. Murphy's law contradicts that assumption and while it is definitely a Debbie-downer way of viewing your circumstances, sometimes the ugly truth can be a bitter pill to swallow.

Now, you might be asking, where are you going with this? Aren't you supposed to be telling me what to do in an emergency? The answer to these questions is a yes. This pessimistic law is something that everyone needs to consider when it comes to traveling on the road everyday. While being stuck on the side of the road is a major inconvenience, it can almost always be prevented or mitigated in certain circumstances. Here is a guided list of points that will allow a victim of a vehicle breakdown to get back on the road safely.

First, it is always wise to act preemptively when it involves travelling on the road. What this means is that proper preparation will enable a breakdown to evoke a response rather than a reaction. A response is thought out, planned, and prepared. While a reaction is impulsive and caused by an unforeseen event. How do you respond to a breakdown, rather than react? Simply put, you prepare for a breakdown before it occurs. This can venerate itself in the form of having various tools and equipment on-hand before a situation arises. Good things to prepare for a response to a breakdown would be to keep things like:

  • Specialized Clothing- This can encompass different outerwear pieces like blankets, reflective jackets, waterproof clothing, and high-visibility items.
  • Spare Tire- While most vehicles come with a spare already with the vehicle, the importance of this piece cannot be overstated. A blowout with no backup can leave a vehicle stranded for hours or days depending on the location. Make sure to have a spare that fits your vehicle, as well as a jacking system that can be operated manually.
  • Communication Necessities- Most people in the modern-era carry cellular devices that can be used remotely within a serviceable area. It is crucial to have a functioning communication asset that will allow someone to call for help if needed. Having extra phone chargers and portable batteries will make a phones functionality last far longer.
  • Jumper Cables- Some vehicles will include a set of jumper cables. These cables are highly encouraged to have for any battery mishap that might occur.
  • Lighting- Having a light to see in the dark is another valuable tool that can make night breakdowns much easier. Make sure to grab a flashlight, portable wide lamp, or any other lighting device before travelling.

Oh and don't forget to pack extra snacks to munch on!

In conclusion, the best way to handle a break down is to prepare for one before it occurs. Getting in touch with a team that can help is a valuable tool that will help travelers get back on the road in a safe and efficient timeframe.
