Do These 5 Things Before Leaving on a Road Trip

When a holiday or long-weekend rolls around, there are many reasons to get excited about driving somewhere new or familiar to take some time off. Taking extra steps to ensure the trip goes smoothly will allow the party to make the best of the situation and avoid any unforeseeable mishaps.

Follow these five steps to learn more about how you can make your next road trip as stress-free and enjoyable as possible.

1. Plan for Contingencies

More plainly stated, this is the first and most crucial step which is to plan for the worst case scenario. For most people, the worst case scenario involves packing certain items to aid in the event of a breakdown, collision, or other mishap on the road. Make sure to keep on-hand a medical kit, extra clothing, a portable light source, portable chargers, and cautionary reflective equipment.

Plan ahead of an accident by coming up with a plan for what to do in the event that a mishap occurs. Make sure your vehicle is outfitted with a spare tire and basic repair tools (ie jumper cables, tire iron, and a jacking device). Putting these preventative measures in place will make minor breakdowns a breeze. Also ensure that your vehicle insurance is up to date and have a
roadside assistance vendor available like AAA or another care provider.

2. Budget the Adventure

Alternate transportation methods like plane or boat can be costly; opting to drive will save money. Allotting the proper funds to make sure there is adequate money for gas, food, and lodging accommodations will take an heir of stress off of the traveling party. Like the contingency plan, make sure that there is a proper plan in place for where your money will be going throughout the trip. Having a predetermined financial plan will allow the travelers enjoy their time off, rather than monitoring the pocketbook.

3. Check the Vehicle

Taking the road trip vehicle to a licensed mechanic for a checkup will ensure that you will not encounter any mechanical issues on the road. If you are checking the vehicle yourself, make sure to look for adequate tire pressure, fluid levels, braking power, and electrical component function. Taking the smaller steps in the beginning will save time, money, and energy in the long-term.

4. Craft an Adaptable Itinerary

Having an ideal final destination is good precursor to a successful road trip. However, planning for a few detours, stops, and reroutes are to be expected when making a long-haul trip across cities and states. Make sure that your road trip plan includes time for alternate routing and stops for food and bathroom breaks.

Crafting a spontaneous route involves less planning and more preventative measures. Make sure that your vehicle has the legs to run the race, then allow adventure to decide the course of the expedition. Having rigid plans can take away from the adventurous nature of road trips.

5. Buy an Atlas or Map

The ease and convenience of GPS (global positioning system) can be a handy and easy way to navigate your next trip. However, these technologies can fail when inadequate cell reception is unavailable. Or perhaps an electrical malfunction occurs and your satellite fed GPS is no longer usable. In situations like these, it is crucial to have a physical map as a backup.

Having an up to date map will also allow you to find surrounding attractions and points of interest that may otherwise not be found by a GPS. Keeping a map or atlas on hand will make travelling safer accessible in any reception environments.
